NASA Origins and the Space Technology Hall of Fame

On August 26, 2021, at the Space Foundation's 36th Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Emisshield, Inc. was inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame, the recognition reserved for space technologies successfully transformed into products that improve life on Earth. Dr. John Olver, Emisshield's President and CEO, became the program's 85th individual inductee.

How did the technology travel from NASA to industry?

Developed at NASA's Ames Research Center Entry Systems and Technology Division in the early 1990s for spacecraft thermal protection, including work supporting the X-33 and X-34 launch vehicle programs, the high emissivity material was licensed by NASA to Emisshield in 2001 and engineered since into 40+ industrial formulations serving petrochemical refining, steel and aluminium, glass, power generation, ethanol, kilns, and crematories.

What happened at the induction?

Dr. John Olver, a Virginia Tech civil engineering graduate (1975), accepted the individual honor. Carol Carroll, Deputy Center Director of NASA Ames Research Center and a fellow Virginia Tech alumna (mechanical engineering, 1983), accepted the Organization Award alongside Emisshield. Space Foundation CEO Tom Zelibor described the standard both met: "adapting space technologies into commercial products that improve our quality of life on Earth."

What does the recognition mean for a buyer?

Hall of Fame induction is NASA-community verification that the technology transfer is real, the science is sound, and the commercial results are documented. It is the basis for every NASA heritage claim on this site, and it is why Emisshield is the only high emissivity coating in the Space Technology Hall of Fame.
