Furnace Roll High Emissivity Coating: Scale Pickup Eliminated on Duraloy Plate Heat-Treating Rolls
| Industry | Iron & Steel |
|---|---|
| Asset | Plate heat-treating furnace rolls |
| Customer or location | Austenitizing steel plate furnace, natural gas |
| Products used | Duraloy MO-RE 1® high-carbon austenitic alloy, Emisshield coated |
| Headline metric | Scale pickup eliminated |
| Secondary metric | 1,750°F (950°C) |
High-temperature furnace rolls from Duraloy Technologies were coated with Emisshield for use in an austenitizing steel plate furnace where scale accumulated on rolls at the furnace exit. The coating eliminated pickup on the roll surface, removing a source of plate surface defects, extending roll life, and reducing downtime.
01
What was the challenge?
Scale accumulating on exit rolls marked the plate surface and shortened roll life.
02
What was applied?
Emisshield on Duraloy MO-RE 1® rolls operating at 1,750°F (950°C) in natural-gas service.
03
What were the results?
| Metric | Uncoated | Coated |
|---|---|---|
| Scale pickup on roll surface | Recurring | Eliminated |
| Plate surface defects from scale | Present | Removed |
| Roll operational life | Baseline | Extended |
| Downtime | Baseline | Reduced; higher production efficiency |
04
Why did it work?
The sealed, high emissivity roll surface runs at a uniform temperature that scale does not adhere to, and sheds absorbed heat by radiation. See Parts & OEMs.
